Specialists in American folk art of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, Martin and Kitty Jacobs of the Splendid Peasant maintain an exceptional, ever changing and exciting inventory. We sell weathervanes, game boards, carnival art, architecturals and decoys -- and always the unexpected. Expect a tower clock from France and a self-taught artist's striking representation of Roberto Clemente. Don't be surprised by a stunning pair of full-sized herons or a beautifully patinated wooden whale weathervane. Our taste runs to bold, graphic and striking sculptural pieces with extraordinary surfaces. And most probably Mozart (but perhaps Tina Turner) will be playing in the background.
Three years ago after 20 years we closed our galleries in South Egremont which many of you fondly remember and moved to a stunning loft in a former factory building on Bristol Harbor in Bristol, Rhode Island. We wanted to sail. The sailing is out of our system and we miss the Berkshires. We're building an exciting home and gallery on Foley Road in Sheffield, but until the construction is complete we'll have a shop at 296 South Main Street (Route 7) in Sheffield in the Cupboards and Roses building.
The Splendid Peasant has been featured in Architectural Digest, The Robb Report, Country Living, The Boston Globe, Metropolitan Home and many other publications.
This summer we'll be open daily except Tuesday from 10 to 5. And come the fall, we'll split our time and inventory between Sheffield and Greenwich Village, New York.
